Roselle Park Council Bans Data Centers, Recognizes Local Champions and Infrastructure Progress
- Meeting Overview:
The Roselle Park Borough Council’s recent meeting saw the unanimous adoption of an ordinance prohibiting data centers in all zoning districts, alongside recognition of local champions in baton twirling and athletics. Infrastructure updates, including ongoing transportation projects and new safety measures, were also highlighted.
Central to the meeting was the council’s decision to adopt ordinance 2860, which amends Chapter 40 of the borough’s code to prohibit data centers across all zoning districts. This ordinance, having been reviewed and recommended by the Municipal Land Use Board, was passed with four affirmative votes and no public opposition. The absence of any public comments during the hearing phase underscored the ordinance’s smooth passage.
In addition to legislative actions, the council celebrated local achievements, starting with the recognition of the Diamondettes, a baton twirling and dance group. This presentation, led by Nicole Marie Placa, highlighted the unique program’s focus on internal strength and social-emotional awareness. Individual achievements were celebrated, including those of Juliana Concetta Schultz and Aubrey Sauce, who were recognized for their performances in baton twirling competitions. The Stars, part of the Diamondettes, were commended for securing their third consecutive state championship.
Further recognition was extended to the borough’s young athletes during the spring season athletic awards segment. Achievements in track, softball, and baseball were acknowledged, with standout performances from Skyler Boyd in track events and Mia Batello in softball. The 2026 baseball team’s Valley Division championship win was also celebrated.
Infrastructure developments were another key focus of the meeting. The mayor reported ongoing communications with NJ Transit regarding the Roselle Park train station rehabilitation project and highlighted an upcoming road safety audit by NJ DOT on Route 28. This audit is part of a broader corridor improvement project aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and updating infrastructure. Recent local improvements were also reported, with Easy Ride completing permanent striping and safety upgrades at key intersections, a project achieved without taxpayer expense thanks to partnerships with various organizations.
In the public comment section, resident Jamie Matthews raised questions about the appointment process for the land use board, expressing concerns about ethical conduct. The mayor responded by explaining the background considerations for appointments, particularly the expertise of appointees like Jason Rooney.
The meeting also addressed routine council business, including the adoption of ordinances related to salary ranges for non-union employees and recreation fees. Resolutions covering a variety of topics, such as grant applications for infrastructure improvements, renewal of alcohol licenses, and recognition of resignations, were also approved. Among these, resolution 149-26 stood out for its call to strengthen oversight of autism therapy services, emphasizing the need for accountability while ensuring continued family access to care.
Council members provided updates on upcoming community events and expressed condolences for recent losses within the community.
