Roselle Park Council Tackles Property Collapse and Celebrates Local Heroes
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Roselle Park Borough Council, one notable issues included the collapse of a long-vacant property, the promotion of a police officer, and various community achievements. The council discussed the collapse of a property on East Westfield Avenue, the promotion of Patrolman James Company to sergeant, and recognized local accomplishments such as a state wrestling championship.
The most notable topic was the partial collapse and subsequent demolition of the property on East Westfield Avenue, formerly a laundromat. The council discussed the history of the property, which had been abandoned for over a decade. A council member explained that the property had recently been sold in July 2023, with plans for redevelopment into a home improvement showroom and office space. However, the process faced delays due to the owner’s health issues, specifically a heart attack. Despite efforts to stabilize the structure, it collapsed, necessitating demolition by a private contractor due to safety concerns. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. The council praised the swift response of the police and fire departments in ensuring public safety. The mayor communicated with the property owner before the meeting. The council acknowledged the challenges of property redevelopment, particularly when health complications arise, and emphasized their commitment to addressing community concerns.
Another focal point of the meeting was the promotion of Patrolman James Company to the rank of sergeant within the Roselle Park Police Department. The council adopted a resolution to promote Company, resulting in applause from attendees. The mayor shared a personal anecdote about Company’s father, a former police officer known for his fairness, and expressed confidence in Company’s leadership abilities. Company, who joined the department in 2004, has held various roles including community policing and the detective bureau. He was recognized as Officer of the Year by the department and noted for his outstanding attendance record. In his acceptance speech, Company expressed gratitude to his family, colleagues, and the community, reflecting on a conversation with his father that led him to pursue a career in law enforcement.
The council also celebrated local accomplishments. Lucia Reeri was recognized for winning a state championship in wrestling at 126 pounds. Plans were discussed to honor her and the wrestling team at a future meeting. Additionally, the council acknowledged a local resident for achieving 2,000 points in her wrestling career and expressed pride in the community’s achievements.
Several ordinances were introduced and approved during the meeting, including Ordinance 2849, which addresses permits and fees associated with property inspections. The ordinance does not apply to owner-occupied residences but targets income-generating properties. Other ordinances focused on amending salary ranges for non-union employees, establishing the police department, and regulating handicap parking for private residences. These ordinances were unanimously approved and are set for a second reading and public hearing in April 2026.
The council addressed various community and administrative matters, including the renewal of public health service agreements, the establishment of summer hour schedules for Borough Hall, and financial advisory services. A significant initiative was announced to celebrate Roselle Park’s 125th anniversary, involving the planting of 125 new trees throughout the community. Residents were encouraged to participate by requesting tree plantings through the Department of Public Works service portal.
During the public comment portion, residents raised concerns about property maintenance and safety. One resident expressed frustration with the borough’s handling of dilapidated buildings, questioning why action is only taken when structures pose an imminent danger. A council member clarified the borough’s authority to address unsafe buildings and reiterated the importance of distinguishing between blight and safety threats. Another resident questioned the safety of a building lacking a roof, highlighting tensions between visible decay and technical safety assessments.
