South Hunterdon School Board Celebrates Educators of the Year Amid Budget and Construction Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent South Hunterdon School Board meeting, the recognition of outstanding educators took center stage alongside discussions on budget and construction project updates. The board celebrated its teachers and educational service professionals of the year. Meanwhile, the meeting also addressed financial challenges, including budget adjustments and the status of ongoing construction projects.
The meeting began with the acknowledgment of the Governor’s Educators of the Year from each school within the district. Principal Wanda Canyon from South Hunterdon Regional Elementary School praised Dawn Rhodess for her role as a preschool instructional coach and intervention specialist. Rhodess was recognized for her dedication to the pre-K program, which has expanded under her guidance. Canyon emphasized Rhodess’s impact, stating, “Your passion and dedication resonate deeply with both colleagues, students, and their families,” underscoring her influence within the school community.
Miss Weaver was also honored as the teacher of the year for her work in kindergarten, with Canyon noting her ability to foster a love of school in young children. Principal Jen Mcnite introduced Mrs. Caitlyn Wesnner from South Hunterdon Middle School, commending her commitment to special education and her inclusive teaching approach.
In the high school, Principal Adam Wright presented Mr. Kyle Hart, a physical education teacher, as the educator of the year. Hart was acknowledged for his energetic promotion of healthy habits and school spirit, particularly through initiatives like “Night at the Nest.” Mrs. Ashley Williams was recognized as the educational service professional of the year for her work as a mental health counselor, supporting the emotional well-being of students.
The meeting then transitioned to discussions on the district’s budget and construction projects. A focus was placed on the financial implications of recent construction endeavors, with approximately $5.85 million allocated for elementary and middle school bids. The board decided to exclude certain elements from the bids to maintain consistency in the district’s security systems. This decision aimed to prevent contractors from using substitutes that did not align with the district’s standards.
The board also addressed issues with the roof of the former LPS school, which began leaking despite a 20-year warranty. With the original contractors out of business, the district applied for ROD grants to fund the roof replacement and an HVAC upgrade in the gym. The grants covered 40% of the projects, reducing the district’s cost for the roof replacement to $591,000 after credits, and the HVAC unit to $296,790.
Budgetary concerns were a prominent topic, with the board proposing a 3.5% budget increase, achieved by cutting $900,000, including the elimination of five full-time positions. The budget maintained essential programs and services, such as mental health support and transportation for extracurricular activities. Tax implications were discussed, with expected monthly increases for residents in different municipalities.
The board also explored the sale of the West Amwell School, planning to use proceeds to pay down referendum debt and reduce future financial obligations. Public comments included gratitude for transparency regarding the referendum balance sheet and concerns about potential financial mismanagement.
In addition to budget discussions, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education was covered. A new AI policy committee has been established to guide the appropriate use of AI in schools, emphasizing ethical considerations and the preservation of critical thinking skills.
The meeting concluded with updates on community and school initiatives, including internet-enabled device laws, a survey on substance abuse and mental health, and efforts to improve student well-being through digital resets and delayed cell phone introductions.
