South River School Board Celebrates Retirees, Launches New Mental Health Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The South River School Board meeting on June 18, 2026, was marked by farewells to long-serving staff members and the introduction of new mental health programs aimed at bolstering student well-being. Retirements within the district were celebrated, while partnerships with organizations like Marble Health were highlighted as part of ongoing efforts to support student mental health.
The meeting commenced with the recognition of several retirees who have dedicated years of service to the South River School District. Superintendent Sylvia Zircher introduced the retirees, starting with Mrs. Lynn Boiler, who concluded a 27-year tenure as a health and physical education teacher. Her commitment to students and the positive impact she had on the community were praised. Mr. Robert Dman, recognized for his enthusiastic involvement in various programs, was also acknowledged alongside Corey Praasini, a middle school guidance counselor with 20 years of service. Praasini was noted for her supportive presence and ability to connect with students. Kimutia was honored for her extensive career, particularly in special education, where she inspired both students and colleagues. The board also acknowledged the retirements of Maria Hunzel Roco Richio and board member Sha Hussein, who were unable to attend the meeting. The board president expressed a appreciation for all retirees, hoping they would enjoy their well-deserved retirements.
The meeting then transitioned to the district’s newly introduced mental health initiatives. Mr. Crouch presented the therapy program involving dogs, which has garnered positive feedback from the community. This program, alongside the district’s partnership with Marble Health for virtual psychology and psychiatry visits, addresses the challenges of accessing mental health services. Mr. Crouch invited questions from board members.
Superintendent Zircher further elaborated on the district’s focus on student safety and emotional well-being. She shared a report on student safety data, revealing that while no incidents were reported at the Early Learning Center or the primary school, the elementary school’s incidents dropped from the previous year. The middle school reported a slight increase due to students experimenting with vaping, while the high school saw a reduction in incidents. The superintendent highlighted various training programs and initiatives, such as the Mindfulness program and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), aimed at improving student safety. The district’s collaboration with mental health organizations was emphasized, noting the presence of clinicians working within schools to address students’ higher needs.
In addition to these initiatives, Superintendent Zircher reported on the recent senior awards night, where $62,587 in scholarships were awarded to 67 students, expressing gratitude to community members and organizations for their support. She also discussed the annual districtwide day of service, engaging students K-12 in community service activities. Details of the activities would be posted on the district website, and parents were encouraged to register their children for summer programs. These include the 21st Century program offering remediation, enrichment, and ESL instruction, a learning acceleration program for high-impact tutoring, and a credit recovery program for grades 9-12. An extended school year for special needs students at risk of regression during summer months was also noted.
The meeting also covered updates on summer projects, with Superintendent Zircher announcing the closure of school parking lots starting June 29 for repairs. Alternative parking options would be available, and the importance of completing the project was emphasized. Other projects included the installation of smartboards, HVAC control upgrades, and a renovation of the middle school gymnasium.
Public comments followed, alongside committee reports. The finance committee presented a list of 50 resolutions for approval, which were recommended for adoption. The instruction, policy and legislation, and human resources committees provided updates and recommendations for approval of various items, including the introduction of a new ESL supervisor. The safety and risk management committee presented three items for approval, while the residency committee recommended one item. All items were moved to act under a consent resolution, which passed unanimously.
