Southwick Library Board Grapples with Budgetary Challenges Amid Rising Fuel Costs
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Southwick Library Board meeting covered the significant challenges posed by increasing fuel and energy costs, which have placed pressure on the library’s budget. The trustees deliberated on the complexities of managing these expenses while still maintaining essential services and planning for future needs. The meeting also addressed issues related to upcoming programs, resource accessibility, and board member changes.
The primary focus of the meeting was the library’s budget, particularly the impact of rising fuel and energy costs. The trustees discussed the tightness of the budget’s fuel line, acknowledging the difficulty of predicting expenses due to fluctuating weather conditions and energy prices. The budget management was described as a “balancing act,” necessitating reactive measures rather than proactive control over costs.
Concerns were voiced about the unpredictability of utility rates, which have previously complicated financial planning for the library. The recent budget for natural gas had settled at $8,400 after years of higher costs, but recent winters and increased rates have challenged this figure. The library’s electricity line had benefited from an increase, yet fuel costs had unexpectedly risen, prompting financial concerns. Approximately $7,543 remained in the electricity line, while only $768 was left in the fuel line, highlighting the urgency of addressing these budgetary constraints before the fiscal year concluded.
To mitigate these financial challenges, the library has been exploring alternatives for obtaining necessary materials. Trustees discussed the importance of purchasing supplies in advance to combat rising costs, noting that prices for items such as paper and toner cartridges have increased over recent years. Small adjustments included redesigning bookmarks to be printed in-house, which was viewed as a practical cost-saving measure.
In addition to budgetary discussions, the meeting addressed the library’s role in providing accessible resources to the community. The trustees highlighted the importance of making literature and information available to residents, emphasizing the savings achieved by borrowing books from the library system rather than purchasing them. Partnerships that allow patrons to access digital resources such as Hoopla, Libby, and Overdrive were also underscored, with an emphasis on promoting these resources more effectively.
The library’s programming and upcoming events were another area of focus. The upcoming summer reading program, scheduled to begin on June 24, will feature activities like an ice cream truck, glitter tattoos, and a mobile zoo. The popular mobile mini-golf event is set to return on August 7, transforming the library into a mini-golf course. Despite these engaging events, there was concern about the recent decline in attendance, attributed to reduced programming due to staff transitions.
A development announced during the meeting was the resignation of board member Kathy Fishbach, who decided not to continue her service. The process for appointing a new trustee was outlined, and interested candidates were encouraged to contact the select board office. Fishbach’s term had one year remaining, and the board expressed hope that new candidates would come forward to fill the vacancy.
As the meeting concluded, the trustees discussed scheduling their next meeting for July 14, noting that there would be no meeting in August unless matters arose. The session ended with a motion to adjourn.
