Susquehanna Township School Board Celebrates Historic Triumph: Girls’ Basketball Team Wins Championship.
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Susquehanna Township School Board meeting, the spotlight shone brightly on the girls’ basketball team for their historic PIAA District 3 championship win. The team was honored with certificates, and individual players received accolades for their achievements. Recognition extended to the coaching staff, particularly head coach Duron Dickerson, who was named coach of the year. State Representative Justin Fleming joined in the celebration, presenting a citation from the House of Representatives and acknowledging the team’s impressive 22-5 season record. The meeting also touched on various topics, from academic accomplishments to community partnerships and the establishment of a school district Hall of Fame.
The girls’ basketball team’s historic achievement took center stage as the team members, including Devin Archer, Kyra Jackson, Desara Lee, London Lemon, Deni Lester, Ava London, JC Martin, Lyanna Morales, and Cassidy, among others, were celebrated for their outstanding performance. Certificates of achievement were presented to the players. Individual player achievements were also recognized, with Devin Archer and JC Martin receiving all-division and all-conference honors, and Ava London acknowledged for her all-division and all-conference first-team status.
State Representative Justin Fleming addressed the team, commending their hard work and dedication. He presented a citation from the House of Representatives, emphasizing the significance of their victory and the pride it brought to the community. Fleming remarked, “You have given this community something to celebrate, an extraordinary thing to celebrate.”
In addition to the celebration of the basketball team, the meeting recognized the contributions of the Nidinger family to the school community. The family was awarded a certificate of appreciation for their active involvement in school activities, such as serving on the PTSO and providing snacks for events. The principal expressed gratitude for the continued support from families at the middle and high school levels.
Another topic of discussion was student attendance and its impact on academic performance. Efforts to reach the statewide average of 94.1% attendance were noted, with particular attention given to enhancing student engagement and preparing them for standardized tests. The introduction of Advanced Placement (AP) courses and partnerships with Harrisburg University were discussed as means to provide students with advanced educational opportunities.
The board also discussed targeted intervention strategies to support struggling students. New initiatives, such as intervention groups during advisory periods, aimed to assist students in meeting academic expectations. An honors breakfast event was introduced to recognize high-achieving students, while the fall festival celebrated those meeting behavioral and academic criteria. The administration expressed excitement about the potential to move from tier two to tier three status in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), recognizing the limited number of tier three schools in the state.
Community partnerships played a role in enhancing student outcomes, as highlighted by Jeffrey Mack, the community partner liaison. Mack reported the development of over 40 partnerships and noted various programs, such as mentoring initiatives and collaborations with local organizations. Notable activities included trips to Fort Indiantown Gap and Lincoln University, aimed at expanding students’ exposure to educational opportunities. Mack also mentioned plans for students to shadow Representative Justin Fleming at the Capitol and discussed the integration of Junior Achievement programming into schools.
A student, Yanelli Ruiz, shared a personal testimony about how Mack’s efforts positively impacted her career planning, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in providing students with opportunities. Ruiz expressed gratitude for the exposure to various careers, stating, “without Mr. Mack’s coordination, I wouldn’t have gotten in contact with the Parks and Recreation Department.” She highlighted the role of such opportunities in fostering community engagement and supporting underrepresented communities.
The meeting also addressed the establishment of a school district Hall of Fame, with nominations for the inaugural class set to be accepted. The Hall of Fame aims to recognize a wide range of achievements beyond athletics, including contributions in arts, education, business, government, and community service. The criteria for nominations include achieving state, national, or international recognition, with a focus on diversity in contributions.
In addition to celebrating achievements, the board discussed logistical matters, such as the nomination process for a recognized alumni group and community support initiatives, like a fundraising effort at Giant Foods. The meeting also covered PSSA testing schedules and addressed concerns raised by a parent about student pickup procedures at Sir Lindamuth School.
