Union Township Celebrates Veterans and Emerging Youth Leaders in Dynamic Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Union Township Committee convened to honor local veterans, launch a youth leadership initiative, and address various community matters, including public safety, cultural events, and infrastructure improvements. The meeting included recognitions, new programs, and discussions on ordinance adoptions.
In a notable highlight of the meeting, two local veterans were honored in recognition of Women’s History Month. The committee celebrated Priscilla Thomas, a Navy veteran and proud graduate of Union High School, with a testimonial resolution acknowledging her exemplary service. Also recognized was Debbie Bernard, a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force Reserve, for her 26 years as a flight nurse. Both women were lauded for their dedication and contributions to the nation, drawing appreciative applause from attendees.
In a related initiative, the Mayor introduced the Junior Mayor Leadership Program, designed to educate and empower young leaders in the community. The program’s objectives include fostering civic engagement, understanding local government operations, and developing leadership skills. Students Jaden Chase, Vera Acavdo, Hannah Lee, Isaac Renee, Leah Vasquez, and Benjamin Sales were acknowledged for their selection into the program. Benjamin Sales expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing the support he received from teachers, family, and friends, and underscoring the community spirit that nurtures its members.
The meeting also addressed community infrastructure issues. The committee adopted several ordinances to create new handicap parking spaces, including on Basser Avenue, 1869 Manor Drive, and Foxall Road, all approved unanimously. Another noteworthy decision was the establishment of an Arts Director position for the Union Theater.
Further resolutions included the authorization of shared service agreements with the townships of Dover and Chatham for health officer services. The committee approved a change order for a road reconstruction project, reducing the contract amount, and sanctioned a professional service agreement for the Davis Park splash pad project. An emergency contract for snow removal services and the purchase of historical street signs were also authorized. A resolution involving a settlement agreement with Signatures LLC was introduced and approved, along with the necessary financial actions.
Community and cultural events were also a focal point. The Portuguese American Civic Association received approval for a Portugal Day flag-raising ceremony and event, albeit without spotlights. The Connecticut Farms Church was granted a request to advertise its Vacation Bible School with a banner, and the Union Haitian Association was permitted a flag-raising ceremony. A financial empowerment event at Rapkin Park was approved, pending park availability.
The committee received and filed department reports, including updates from the Union Fire Department on recent incidents. The department responded to a smoke condition, extinguished a dumpster fire, and managed a downed power line incident. They also issued fire safety reminders for the spring season. The senior and recreation departments reported upcoming wellness checks, a stress reduction program, a smart driving class, a book club meeting, and a casino trip. An Easter egg hunt at Rapkin Park was scheduled, featuring entertainment for various age groups.
The Department of Public Works reported on infrastructure maintenance, including pothole repairs, sewer line flushing, and enzyme treatments for grease-prone areas. Traffic enforcement efforts were noted, with numerous citations issued for traffic violations.
The Mayor congratulated the Union High School Army Junior ROTC program for achieving national drill champion status and a perfect accreditation inspection score. Upcoming community events were discussed, including an Easter scavenger hunt, a Lego Building Workshop, and a networking event to support a local child with a brain tumor. A Taste of Union benefit is planned for a community member facing medical challenges.
During public comments, Ruth Slovvic inquired about the inclusion of clergy for prayer at council meetings. She also questioned the visibility and funding of new historical street signs. The response clarified that the signs are intended to replace worn ones, with improved visibility, especially in winter conditions.
