Voorhees School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Honors Long-Serving Educators
- Meeting Overview:
The Voorhees School Board meeting highlighted student accomplishments in national contests, honored retiring educators for their lasting contributions, and addressed administrative matters, including the rising costs of healthcare for public school employees.
The meeting commenced by celebrating the achievements of Signal Hill School students in a national book song challenge, where participants composed and performed songs inspired by their favorite books. This creative competition garnered five grand prize winners, earning the school $8,000 to enhance its library resources. Students and educators were acknowledged for their dedication, with Principal Sal highlighting the role of the library media specialist, Miss Herz, in fostering a love for reading and creativity among students.
Performances from four groups of students captivated the audience. Third graders Ava Van Selton and Stella Climman presented a piece on “Elephant and Piggy,” emphasizing themes of friendship. Another group, including Cameron Conventto, Sahil Chedda, and Charlie Kger, performed a song based on “Amulet,” exploring the book’s emotional elements. Fifth graders London Watson, Sadie Rivella, Ryan Richmond, and Marggo Mansanelli focused their presentation on the book “Drama,” reflecting on the character’s challenges.
Parallel to this, a group of fifth and sixth graders from Crescent School won first place in an essay contest sponsored by the third circuit court’s community and rule of law committee. The contest examined whether the U.S. Constitution addressed grievances from the Declaration of Independence. Students dedicated personal and school time to research and write their essay. Their presentation highlighted the Sixth Amendment’s provision for fair trials and the right to a jury.
In a segment, the board recognized retiring educators, notably Mrs. Tracy Redern, for her nearly 30 years of service at Signal Hill School. Board members expressed gratitude for the dedication of these educators, with one member sharing a personal story about Mrs. Redern’s influence on their family, emphasizing her focus on strong relationships and high expectations. The recognition of retirees was marked by a sense of gratitude and appreciation for their enduring impact on the community.
Administrative discussions covered the appointment of professionals for the upcoming year. The board approved Fryac Fights Hopkins Duffy PC as the architect of record and Todd Sailor as auditor. Legal services contracts were awarded to Gorman, Danella, and Morlock, with broad support from members. The board also addressed the rising healthcare costs for public school employees, considering an email from the New Jersey School Board’s Associate Representative suggesting a resolution for relief. This issue prompted the board to consider advocating for support in navigating these financial challenges.
The introduction of the New Jersey Fair Funding Collective aimed to address legislative concerns affecting school funding. Interest was expressed in joining future discussions to collaborate on improving funding and advocacy efforts. The superintendent acknowledged staff and administrators for their critical role in student success, urging them to take time for rest and rejuvenation over the summer.
Clarifications were provided regarding student tardiness, with plans to redesign the drop-off process to ensure accurate recording of arrival times. Recognition was also given to Jacqueline Prrisbocowski and Angela Scotis for their roles on New Jersey Department of Education committees, reflecting pride in Voorhees’ representation in educational initiatives.
