West Essex School Board Discusses Budget Proposal Amid Rising Costs, Honors ‘Unsung Hero’ Student
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent West Essex School Board meeting, members addressed a proposed budget plan with a taxpayer increase of 2.47%. Additionally, the board celebrated student Ivon Hernandez for his leadership in supporting English language learners.
The primary focus of the meeting was the preliminary budget proposal. Despite facing increased healthcare and insurance costs, the board managed to maintain all current jobs and extracurricular activities. The proposed budget includes a general fund levy of 2.5% and a slight decrease in debt service. A significant portion of the budget, $625,000, is allocated from the capital reserve for installing bidirectional antennas in both school buildings to enhance radio and cell phone coverage, facilitating better communication for school and emergency services.
In a notable highlight, the board recognized Ivon Hernandez, a student who was honored at the Essex County Unsung Heroes Assembly. Hernandez has played a vital role in the creation and leadership of the English Language Learner Club, providing support and fostering inclusivity for new students learning English. His contributions were praised for embodying the essence of the Unsung Hero Award, and he is set to be formally recognized at the June board meeting.
The board also discussed the successful Washington, D.C. trip for 9th graders, emphasizing the educational value and responsibility it instilled in students. The overnight trip was described as an unforgettable opportunity for students to engage with the history and culture of the nation’s capital.
In other developments, the board considered funding requests from the robotics STEM club and the theater club. These clubs seek additional resources to enhance their activities, such as updated tools for robotics and improved costumes and set designs for theater productions.
Additionally, the board was briefed on a recent virtual event organized by the high school guidance department, featuring admissions counselors from prominent universities. The event provided valuable insights for students and parents about college admissions, including essay writing and recommendation letters.
The meeting concluded with updates on the ongoing efforts of the ad hoc referendum committee, which is engaging with staff and community members to gather input for future plans. An upcoming presentation by the district’s architect will provide further details on proposed projects.
