West Windsor-Plainsboro School Board Recognizes Student Achievements in Arts and Athletics
- Meeting Overview:
The West Windsor-Plainsboro School Board meeting was largely dedicated to celebrating student achievements in arts and athletics. Notable accomplishments included High School South’s boys’ volleyball team’s charity success, High School North’s sporting records, and the recognition of students accepted into prestigious music ensembles. The meeting further highlighted the absence of Superintendent Dr. David Aderhold and the publication of his new book.
A major highlight of the meeting was the recognition of student achievements in the arts, particularly music. A presentation focused on students who auditioned and were accepted into the New Jersey Music Educators Association (NJMEA) and the Central Jersey Music Educators Association (CJMEA) ensembles. This acknowledgment was a moment of pride for the students, educators, and the community. Among the recognized students were Ashani Baneri, Rehea Kadambi, and Arav Gupta from High School North, as well as Kaya Ambashta, Pisha Bakshi, and Richard How from High School South. The recognition included applause for the students and special mention of music teachers such as Jesse Argentiano, the band director at High School South, for their dedication.
The meeting celebrated another significant artistic achievement with Ashani Baneri’s second-place finish in the NJMEA Young Composers Competition. Her composition’s world premiere was anticipated at a concert scheduled for April 30. Further musical accomplishments included performances by High School South’s Wind Ensemble and Saxophone Ensemble at the NJMEA conference in Atlantic City. These performances highlighted the high level of talent and dedication among the students, who navigated a competitive selection process to earn these opportunities.
In addition to arts achievements, the board recognized several athletic accomplishments. High School South was proud of its boys’ volleyball team, which raised a record $3,419 for Joey’s Little Angels during their annual “Serve Up Hope” charity game. Furthermore, High School North celebrated individual sports records, including Eva Gedric’s new javelin record and Li Canaden’s milestone in lacrosse.
The meeting also acknowledged the dedication of students involved in activities promoting inclusivity and social awareness. High School South’s student Anna Chen reported on a successful student-organized protest against ICE, which drew around 1,000 participants advocating for immigration awareness. Additionally, student panels at Grover and South focused on fostering inclusivity among students and staff.
Moreover, the board recognized students involved in the Green Stitch project, led by senior Rachel Berliner from High School South. This initiative, which involved creating tote bags from donated clothing, demonstrated strong community engagement and leadership. Rachel’s efforts were further acknowledged with the co-authorship of an article that gained recognition at the National Art Educators Association conference.
The absence of Superintendent Dr. David Aderhold, who was attending a conference, was noted at the meeting. In his stead, Miss Anata expressed the board’s anticipation for honoring students and highlighted the recent publication of Dr. Aderhold’s book, “The Octopus Mindset: A Framework for Educational Leadership.” The board encouraged the community to engage with the book upon his return.
The meeting also included routine administrative discussions. These covered the approval of financial and personnel items, all of which passed unanimously, with one board member abstaining on a specific finance item. The board expressed gratitude to retiring staff members, Steven Best and Charmaine Shraft, for their 25 years of service, acknowledging their contributions to the district.
