Westfield School Board Celebrates Excellence in Education with Multiple Awards
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Westfield School Board meeting prominently featured the celebration of educational excellence through various awards to teachers and staff, as well as discussions on student contributions and future events.
The meeting opened with an awards segment, recognizing the dedication and achievements of Westfield School District staff and educators. Dr. Raymond González initiated this segment by expressing the board’s appreciation for the positive impact made by educators on students and the community. Among the honorees was Nicole Barka, a third-grade teacher from McKinley Elementary School, who received the Charles Philhower Fellowship Award. This prestigious accolade, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield, has been awarded to exemplary elementary educators for 34 years. Barka was acknowledged for her ability to create an engaging and supportive classroom environment. In her acceptance speech, she thanked her colleagues, students, and the community, reflecting on her journey as a teacher and the importance of believing in every child’s potential.
The board also presented the Weman Steingraft Award to Francesco Dory, assistant head custodian at Westfield High School. This award, established to honor non-certificated staff, recognized Dory for his professionalism and leadership in maintaining a safe and welcoming school environment. Dory expressed his gratitude to the school community and emphasized the significance of making both teachers and students feel secure and valued.
Attention turned to the 2026 Optimist Club Intermediate School Outstanding Teacher Awards, recognizing Jessica Mikovitz and Linda Morrison for their contributions to intermediate school education. Mikovitz, an English language arts teacher at Edison Intermediate School, was commended for her organizational skills and collaborative nature. She expressed her gratitude for the support from her colleagues and the Optimist Club. Morrison, a math teacher at Roosevelt Intermediate School, was praised for her engaging teaching style and effective communication with parents. Both awardees spoke about the importance of community and family support in their careers.
Additionally, the Westfield High School Awards of Excellence highlighted several outstanding educators. James Rowan, a Latin teacher, received the Robert and Linda Fouse Memorial Award, while Jeffrey Knight, a social studies teacher, was honored with the Jeffrey Family Above and Beyond Award. Art teacher Lee Jarvis received the PTSO Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, and Caitlyn Cheddar was named the Westfield High School Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Each recipient shared personal reflections on their teaching experiences and the support they have received from the school community.
The meeting also included a student report outlining recent accomplishments by Westfield High School students. The music department was celebrated for its achievements at the Central Jersey Music Educators Association Band Festival, with the wind ensemble earning a gold rating. The choir’s success at the National Jazz Festival and performances at Carnegie Hall were also noted. Student clubs, such as the Red Cross Club and the No Place for Hate Committee, were recognized for their community engagement efforts.
In administrative updates, Dr. González discussed the release of the 2024-25 HIV grade report, part of anti-bullying initiatives, encouraging the community to review the reports and engage with school principals for further details.
The meeting concluded with public comments, where students voiced concerns and suggestions. Alice Manzo, a senior at Westfield High School, advocated for healthier food options in the school cafeteria, citing the negative impact of ultraprocessed foods on student health and academic performance. She proposed more nutritious alternatives and greater transparency regarding nutritional content. Riley Brickman, a junior, suggested the installation of ad blockers on district-issued Chromebooks to enhance the learning environment by reducing distractions.
