Westfield School Board Approves New Holidays and Acknowledges Donations
- Meeting Overview:
The Westfield School Board meeting covered a range of topics including the approval of new school holidays, recognition of student achievements, personnel changes, and generous donations to the district. The board approved the inclusion of Diwali and Lunar New Year as school holidays in the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school calendars. Additionally, the meeting saw the acknowledgment of contributions made by students, staff, and community members, as well as discussions on donations and policy items.
The approval of Diwali and Lunar New Year as school holidays stood out as a key decision by the board, aligning with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
The meeting also celebrated the achievements of the district’s students, with special recognition given to intermediate and high school student musicians and vocalists. Their dedication to music education contributed to the district’s recognition as one of the best communities for music education in the nation for the seventh consecutive year. Student athletes who signed letters of intent with colleges and universities were also acknowledged during the meeting.
Personnel items included the retirement of two long-standing staff members, Carrie Lyman and Jerry Leatherman, whose service and contributions to the school community were highlighted. The board also appointed Jim Daro as the new athletic director and supervisor of Comprehensive Health and Physical Education, and Jackie Spring as the assistant principal at the high school, both of whom expressed their gratitude and excitement for their new positions.
Donations played a role in the meeting, with the board acknowledging several contributions from organizations and individuals. Noteworthy donations included $3,263 from the Westfield High School class of 2013 for an outdoor memorial bench, $110 each from the McKinley PTO for nurses for field trips, $250 from Groundwork Elizabeth for a habitat garden, and an anonymous donation of a painting easel for the district’s art department. The district also received funds for a canopy shade for the Lincoln Playground, music equipment, a TV and monitor for the high school gymnasium, and ukuleles for the music department. These donations were met with gratitude and are set to enhance the school community’s resources.
An additional topic of community interest was the renaming of the Edison baseball field to Brewster Field, in honor of a distinguished alumnus and former teacher and coach. The Brewster family has agreed to fund the necessary updates for the field.
The policy section of the agenda was approved, including action items under curriculum, instruction, and assessment. During the public comment section, two speakers addressed the need to expand before and after care programming in the schools. They cited a petition with 593 signatures, emphasizing the community’s concern. The board acknowledged the issue and assured that efforts were being made to resolve the waitlist for aftercare.
