The board also tackled proposals for technological improvements and noted the achievements of sports teams and educational programs.
The meeting was marked by a series of commendations, beginning with the recognition of outstanding educators who have shown exceptional commitment to the students and the community. Among the honored were Mrs. DeLuca, a kindergarten teacher and softball coach lauded for her 28-year service and dedication to instilling a love for the game in her players; Miss Kiss, a teacher’s assistant praised for her passion and drive in ensuring students reach their full potential; Miss Nelson, a health and physical education teacher celebrated for promoting a healthy, active, and supportive environment; Mr. Jel, an elementary school counselor recognized for his student support and assistance; Miss Julian Tone, a sixth-grade language arts teacher honored for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion; and Mrs. Guerrero, a social worker commended for her 19 years of experience and efforts in creating an inclusive environment at Community Middle School.
Additionally, Mrs. Sandra Pedes, a special education teacher at the Community Middle School, was honored for her 20 years of teaching experience and her work addressing challenging behavioral issues. High school’s educational specialist of the year, Miss Julia Bini, was recognized for establishing a supportive and therapeutic counseling program. Miss Janelle Filiatro, the Governor’s educator of the year, was celebrated for her 23 years in education and her role in creating innovative programs like the STAR program and the Brook Cafe.
Students were also spotlighted for their achievements. Nominations for Central Jersey players of the week and selections for the Spanish, French, and English National Honor Societies were announced, along with the recognition of Students of the Month from various grades and winners of school spelling bees. These recognitions culminated in rounds of applause and expressions of congratulations, creating a celebratory atmosphere throughout the meeting.
On the governance front, the committee discussed the potential formation of a joint committee with South Bound Brook, with the next steps involving formal discussions between the two presidents. The human resources committee reviewed staffing situations, highlighting new hires and renewals.
The operations committee addressed proposals for the High School auditorium’s audio-visual system upgrade, recommending a proposal from Keyboard Consultants. The committee also updated the district technology plan, focusing on identifying technology needs for the next three years, discussed the transfer of surplus funds into the Capital Reserve account, and future meetings related to a shared services agreement with the municipality.
Academic and extracurricular program updates included the success of sports teams and the establishment of a College and Career Readiness program to support college applications and job resumes. The technology department’s future professionals program was preparing for upcoming interviews and training. The music and art semester courses were undergoing changes, and a partnership with Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) was highlighted as an effort to focus on college and career planning.
The South Bound Elementary School’s recertification for the lighthouse program was a highlight, marking progress towards Legacy status, and the scheduling of the 8th-grade graduation for June 14th was noted. During the meeting’s public participation section, there were no comments from the public.
