Winslow School Board Lauds Teachers of the Year Amid Concerns Over Classroom Disruptions
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Winslow School Board meeting, educators from across the district were celebrated for their outstanding contributions, with special recognition given to the district’s Teachers of the Year. This recognition was a key focus of the meeting, as board members and community representatives emphasized the educators’ roles in shaping students’ experiences. Alongside these accolades, issues were raised by parents, notably concerning classroom disruptions impacting students’ learning environments.
The meeting opened with the announcement of several Teachers of the Year from different schools within the district. Miss Claudia Riiffken was honored as Winslow Township High School’s Teacher of the Year, praised for her dedication and innovative methods in teaching history. Her ability to connect historical events with current happenings was highlighted as a hallmark of her engaging teaching style. Not just confined to the classroom, her efforts extended to participating in school events and advocating for student success.
At Winslow Township Middle School, Miss Tracy Irvin was celebrated for her work in television production. Her approach to education inspires creativity and self-expression, allowing students to tell stories and celebrate their achievements. Her commitment to nurturing a family-oriented school environment was noted, as she often involved her own family in school activities.
Mr. Nathan Caldwell, a fifth-grade teacher, was recognized for his impactful teaching since joining the district in 2022. His students’ exceptional writing skills were attributed to his high-quality instruction. Meanwhile, Mr. Brian Dixon was acknowledged for his transition from music to computer education, integrating technology into his teaching and earning the affectionate title of “GOAT” from his students.
Miss Tina Marie Stana, a music teacher honored at Winslow Township Elementary School 4, was lauded for nurturing her students’ love for music. Her effectiveness was underscored by her success in having all 25 boys she selected for the Philadelphia Boys Choir audition accepted. Miss Taiisha Lionel Jeff, from Winslow Township School 3, was recognized for her dynamic teaching style and deep commitment to students, organizing events and providing personal support during challenging times.
The board meeting also addressed issues raised by parents during the public comments section. Sharifa Lawson, a district resident, expressed concerns about classroom disruptions affecting her children’s education. Lawson highlighted ongoing disruptions in her daughter’s inclusion classroom, which she claimed hindered the learning environment. Despite multiple attempts to address these issues with school staff, she reported inadequate responses and delayed actions. Lawson emphasized the need for the school to adhere to the New Jersey code of conduct to ensure a conducive learning atmosphere for all students.
In response to Lawson’s concerns, a school representative assured her that the superintendent would investigate the matter further. The board committed to addressing the issues to prevent further negative impacts on students’ educational experiences.
In addition to recognizing educators and addressing parental concerns, the meeting featured various reports and updates. Discussions included the financial implications of students transferring to Camden County Technical School, with current enrollments impacting the budget significantly. Projections for the next school year suggest an increase in these enrollments.
The development of a five-year strategic plan was also a focal point. These efforts are designed to promote student achievement by fostering stronger ties between parents and educators.
Committee reports highlighted ongoing activities and upcoming events. The marketing committee reminded board members of their participation in the township’s Juneteenth event, while the policy committee scheduled a meeting to discuss several policies and regulations. The technology committee planned to convene soon, and the planning board reported on a new ordinance related to data center regulations.
Community engagement initiatives were also discussed, including a fundraiser for childhood cancer by Winslow School Number Six and a collaboration with Veterans of Foreign Wars to involve veterans as guest readers in elementary schools. These programs aim to foster connections between students and the community, enriching the educational experience.
